Security Fencing Options — Which Fence Type Is Right for Your Property?

← Back to FAQ
Short answer

For security, commercial fencing runs from chain link (cheapest, fast, fine with the right gauge and height) to welded wire anti-climb mesh (no finger or tool holds, the standard for high-security sites) to palisade and ornamental steel (deterrence plus appearance). Wood, vinyl and composite are privacy fences, not security fences. The right choice depends on threat level, visibility needs and budget; we'll walk the site and tell you which one actually fits.

The fence is your first line of defense. Before gates, cameras, or access control ever come into play, the fence itself has to do its job — deter, delay, and define your perimeter. But not all fencing is created equal. The right choice depends on your security requirements, site conditions, budget, and whether you need visibility, privacy, or both.

Here’s a breakdown of every major commercial security fencing option, what each one does well, and where it falls short.

Chain Link Fencing

Chain link is the workhorse of commercial fencing. It’s affordable, fast to install, and available in virtually any height. But there are important differences in finish and gauge that affect both lifespan and appearance.

Galvanized Chain Link

Standard galvanized chain link is coated in zinc to resist rust. It’s the most cost-effective perimeter fence available and works well for construction sites, storage yards, utility perimeters, and temporary enclosures. The silver finish is functional but industrial-looking.

Pros: Lowest upfront cost, widely available, fast installation, good visibility for surveillance cameras
Cons: Can be cut with basic hand tools, no privacy, looks utilitarian, zinc coating degrades over time in harsh climates

Black Vinyl-Coated Chain Link

Same chain link core, but coated in black PVC vinyl. The coating adds corrosion resistance and gives the fence a much cleaner, more professional appearance. This is the standard for commercial properties that want security without looking like a construction site.

Pros: Better corrosion resistance than bare galvanized, blends into the landscape, still allows visibility, moderate cost
Cons: Still vulnerable to cutting, vinyl can crack in extreme cold if low-quality coating is used, no privacy

Welded Wire Mesh Fencing

Welded wire mesh (also called welded mesh panel or rigid mesh fencing) is a significant step up from chain link in terms of security. Instead of woven diamond-pattern wire, welded mesh uses straight wires welded at every intersection, creating a rigid panel that’s much harder to cut, climb, or deform.

Pros: Extremely difficult to cut through (requires power tools), rigid panels resist pushing/bending, clean modern appearance, available in anti-climb profiles (tight mesh spacing), excellent for high-security perimeters
Cons: Higher cost than chain link, requires more precise installation on uneven ground, still provides no privacy

Welded mesh is the standard for data centers, correctional facility perimeters, airport boundaries, and any site where cut-through resistance matters. We install it in 8-foot and 10-foot heights with anti-climb mesh patterns that make hand and toe holds nearly impossible.

Sheet Metal & Solid Steel Panel Fencing

For maximum cut-through protection, solid steel panels or sheet metal fencing eliminates the gaps entirely. There are no individual wires to clip — an intruder would need an angle grinder or cutting torch to breach the fence.

Pros: Maximum cut-through resistance, complete visual privacy, blocks wind (useful for dust control in industrial yards), strong deterrent
Cons: Highest material and installation cost, blocks visibility for cameras and patrols (you can’t see through it), wind load requires heavier posts and deeper footings, can feel oppressive in some settings

Sheet metal fencing is common around military compounds, secure storage facilities, and industrial sites where both privacy and penetration resistance are non-negotiable.

Wood Fencing for Commercial Security

Wood fencing might seem like an odd choice for commercial security, but in the right application it serves a dual purpose: privacy and aesthetics. Solid wood board fencing (typically 6–8 feet tall, with no gaps between boards) blocks sightlines completely. What an intruder can’t see, they’re less likely to target.

Pros: Full privacy, natural aesthetic that suits mixed commercial/residential areas, good for noise reduction, can be built to 8+ feet
Cons: Easier to breach than metal options (can be pried or kicked through), requires ongoing maintenance (staining, sealing, rot repair), degrades faster in Manitoba’s freeze-thaw cycles, not suitable for high-security applications

We recommend wood fencing for commercial properties where appearance and privacy matter more than anti-intrusion performance — think office complexes, daycares, restaurants with patios, and mixed-use developments. For actual security perimeters, pair it with an inner metal fence or use it as a visual screen only.

Barbed Wire

Barbed wire is the classic perimeter deterrent. Strands of twisted wire with sharp barbs at regular intervals are strung along the top of a fence to discourage climbing. It’s inexpensive and effective for agricultural and industrial sites.

Pros: Very low cost, strong visual deterrent, easy to add to existing fences, standard for agricultural and industrial perimeters
Cons: Can be defeated with heavy gloves or a thrown blanket, may not be permitted in municipal/commercial zones (check local bylaws), looks aggressive, liability concerns in public-facing areas

Typically installed as 3–6 strands angled outward at 45 degrees on extension arms above the main fence. In Manitoba, barbed wire is standard on rural, agricultural, and industrial perimeters but restricted in many urban commercial zones.

Razor Wire & Serrated Edge Toppings

Razor wire (also called concertina wire) and serrated fence toppings are the most aggressive anti-climb deterrents available. Razor wire features razor-sharp blades that will cut through clothing and skin on contact. Serrated edge toppings are spiked or blade-topped strips bolted to the top rail of a fence.

Pros: Extremely effective climb deterrent, strong psychological deterrent, virtually impossible to defeat without tools
Cons: Heavily restricted by municipal bylaws in most urban areas, significant liability exposure, not suitable for public-facing properties, requires professional installation

Razor wire and serrated toppings are reserved for high-security facilities only: correctional institutions, military bases, critical infrastructure, and secure industrial compounds. If your municipality permits it and the security need justifies it, it’s the most effective anti-climb solution available.

The Benefits of Privacy Fencing & Additional Height

Regardless of material, two upgrades dramatically improve any security fence: privacy screening and additional height.

Privacy

A fence an intruder can see through lets them observe your operations, identify valuable assets, time security patrols, and plan entry points. Blocking that visibility — through solid panels, privacy slats in chain link, or windscreen fabric — removes the intelligence advantage. What they can’t see, they can’t plan for.

Height

Standard commercial fencing is 6 feet. Upgrading to 8 or 10 feet makes climbing exponentially harder and slower. An 8-foot fence with an anti-climb topping is a serious barrier that delays intrusion long enough for detection systems and response teams to react. Every additional foot of height buys you time — and in security, time is everything.

Our Recommendation

For most commercial properties in Manitoba, we recommend black vinyl-coated chain link at 8 feet as the baseline. It balances cost, durability, and appearance. From there, upgrade based on your threat profile:
