Every automated gate needs safety devices first: photo eyes, edge sensors and vehicle loops are required by UL 325 and stop the gate hitting people or cars. After that, pick access (keypad, remotes, cards, plate recognition, intercom), then resilience (battery backup, heater kit, solar) and convenience (myQ app, exit loops, lighting). We spec the safety set on every install and let you choose the rest.
A gate operator on its own opens and closes a gate. But a complete gate system includes the accessories that make it safe, convenient, and smart. Here's what's available and what we recommend.
Safety Devices
Photo Eyes — infrared beams that detect objects in the gate's path and reverse operation. Required by code on virtually all automated gates.
Vehicle Detection Loops — wire loops buried in the pavement that detect vehicles. Used to trigger automatic opening on approach and to prevent the gate from closing on a vehicle in the opening.
Edge Sensors — contact-sensitive strips on the gate's leading edge that stop or reverse the gate if it contacts anything.
Access Control
Keypads — simple and effective for residential and small commercial applications. Assign unique codes to different users.
Card Readers — proximity cards or fobs for hands-free access. Scalable for commercial sites with many users.
Intercoms — audio or video intercom systems that let you screen visitors before granting access. Available in wired and wireless configurations.
Telephone Entry Systems — visitors call from a directory at the gate, and the system dials your phone. You can open the gate remotely from anywhere.
Remote Controls
Handheld Transmitters — standard remote controls, similar to a garage door opener. Simple and reliable.
myQ Smart Control — LiftMaster's app-based platform. Monitor gate status, open/close remotely, grant temporary access, and receive alerts — all from your phone.
Environmental Add-Ons
Solar Power Kits — for sites without access to AC power. Solar panels charge a battery bank that powers the DC operator. Ideal for rural properties, farm gates, and remote installations.
Battery Backup — keeps your gate operational during power outages. Essential in Manitoba where winter storms can knock out power.
Weatherproof Housings — protective enclosures for operators and electronics. Critical for Manitoba's temperature extremes (-40 to +35 C).
Our Recommendation
At minimum, every automated gate should have: photo eyes, a vehicle detection loop, and some form of remote access (keypad, card reader, or smart control). From there, add accessories based on your security needs and convenience preferences.
