Fence Material Types: Which Fence Is Right for You?

← Back to FAQ
Short answer

Chain link is the most affordable and comes galvanized or black. Welded wire is rigid and harder to climb. Ornamental steel and aluminum look the most finished. Hybrid wood gives you a wood privacy fence on steel posts. Vinyl and composite give you privacy with little or no upkeep. Pick by what matters most: budget, privacy, security or looks.

Every fence material is a trade-off between cost, privacy, security, looks and upkeep. Here’s how the common types compare, and where each one fits.

Chain Link

Galvanized or black-coated steel fabric on steel posts. Residential fence is 11 gauge; commercial is 9 gauge. Privacy slats add screening. The best value per foot. See residential and commercial chain link.

Welded Wire

Rigid welded panels with openings too small for fingers and toes. Harder to climb and cut than chain link, with a cleaner look. See residential and commercial welded wire.

Ornamental Steel and Aluminum

Powder-coated picket panels. Steel is heavier and harder to cut; aluminum never rusts. The right choice for front yards, pools and properties where the fence is part of the look. See ornamental fencing and pool fencing.

Hybrid Wood

Cedar or treated boards on galvanized steel posts — our SteelRoots hybrid wood fence. Full privacy and the warmth of wood, without posts that rot or lean. When boards wear out, you replace boards, not the fence.

Vinyl and Composite

Vinyl panels never need painting. Composite boards look the most like real wood, with colour that runs through the board so there’s no staining. Both are custom fence options.
