How Do I Match the Right Operator to My Gate?

← Back to FAQ
Short answer

Identify the gate type (swing, cantilever slide, barrier, vertical lift), weigh and measure the gate, choose an operator rated at least 25% above that weight, then check duty cycle and site power. Cross-matching doesn't work — a swing operator can't run a slide gate — and under-rating is the number one cause of early failure. We do this on every site walk before quoting.

Matching an operator to a gate isn't as simple as picking the cheapest option that fits. A proper match considers four key factors.

Step 1: Identify Your Gate Type

Each category has operators designed specifically for that motion type. Cross-matching doesn't work.

Step 2: Weigh and Measure

Measure your gate's width, height, and — most importantly — weight. Operators are rated by maximum gate weight. We always recommend choosing an operator rated for at least 25% more than your actual gate weight. This gives you a safety margin and reduces strain on the motor.

Step 3: Assess the Application

Step 4: Consider Power and Connectivity

Does the site have reliable AC power? If not, DC or solar-powered operators are the way to go. Do you need remote monitoring? Smart operators with myQ or similar platforms add that capability.

What About HySecurity?

We service legacy HySecurity operators across Manitoba — SlideDriver, SwingSmart, StrongArm — and we'll keep yours cycling. For new installs we put in LiftMaster, every time. The commercial line covers heavy industrial sites without the supply-chain risk of a niche brand, and we get one accountable parts network behind every install. If you've inherited a HySecurity unit, talk to us about service or a LiftMaster replacement when it's time.
